"Proteomics" comprises a large-scale comprehensive study of the proteome from a certain species. Since proteomics often starts off with a complex mixture of proteins, prior protein separation can be desirable or in some cases even mandatory. In the study of proteins, two main strategies are often used: either gel-based proteomics or gel-free proteomics. In both strategies, identification of proteins is often the main goal. However, in certain approaches mainly in gelfree proteomics, quantitative information on protein abundances can be obtained as well.
